I'm an analytic philosopher who was born of woman, poops (mostly) in toilets, and eats food. AMA

Ok, here goes nothing (or p NOT greater than nothing): What kind of toilet(s)?

Jean-Baptiste

Ooooook, I was hoping for more genuine questions. But usually porcelain. Thanks for the question!

Hmm. Like Jean-Baptiste, you don't seem to have a genuine question. That's disappointing to me. But to answer your question, yes.

How do you manage work and family?

Jacques

Hi Jacques! Thanks for stopping by. To be honest? I don’t always manage. Sometimes I find it tough to strike a balance. Notwithstanding, I try to integrate my career and family life in such a way that both can become part of each other. One of the main reasons why I always wished to be a philosopher, and work in academia, is to be able to be more flexible and to free up some more time for my family and my personal interests.

How did you come to the analytic tradition, and how do you feel about pluralist departments (to the extent that you're familiar with them)?

What is your favorite animal and why?

Wang

Hey Wang. Glad you asked, since this is one of my favorite ice-breaker questions!!! I have to say Orca. Super smart, strong, fast, big, no natural predators, can hunt whatever it wants, strong family bond, and cool camouflage. Basically the most dominant animal in the ocean and it has little to no history of harming people intentionally in the wild.

I for one really appreciate getting to hear from a real analytic philosopher, born of woman, eating, and pooping largely in toilets on various subjects in a public and anonymous format. Some of these questions can be difficult to ask in more personal settings.

While I'm here -- Mary: are you at all concerned that providing so many details about your life here will make it possible for members of the community to identify you?

Gongsun

*Extremely* timely and relevant question, Gongsun. Ever since I was a little kid, people called me "such a debater." I would challenge everything, and I mean EVERYthing! Naps, diaper changes when I was young. Sitting still, cleaning my room when I was older. And committee work today! You name it, I had an argument. ("But why?") In college I took my first philosophy class and it was love at first site.

I. Was. Hooked.

Ever since then, I take in all the philosophy I can get, from colleagues and the wider intellectual world. And this answers your second question! I love pluralist departments, because I feel like the more different we are, the more we realize that we are all the same.

To be honest with you? I'm a little concerned about that, yes. But what I figure is that if the worst case scenario is people knowing who I really am, that's not so bad. It is by knowing each other that we come to love and respect each other.

As an analytic philosopher have you have much experience with thread necroing and, to the extent that you feel sufficiently steeped in the literature here, could you outline out the logical space and maybe sketch the outlines of your own view?

Vince,

I'm not Mary, but I've actually done a lot of thinking on this question. If you don't mind, I'd like to try my hand here. Although I have not had personal, first-hand experience with thread necroing, I do not think that people should be shamed for engaging in this behavior. From a Natural Law (NL) perspective, this kind of thing is going to be immoral, and that just falls out of the very natures of a "person," "death," and an "internet thread." But, as most of the people here know, NL is out of fashion ever since the Enlightenment. So, can we think of utilitarian, Kantian, or Ethics of Care reasons to oppose thread necroing? I think not. And the reason actually comes out of the nature of internet threads themselves, so it's actually somewhat ironic given the now-defunct NL strategy! Internet threads, although subject matters, are non-conscious subjects. There is nothing that it is like to be an internet thread, let alone a dead one. So, in the act of thread necroing, there is really not even a candidate victim, who would experience the putatively impermissible harm. Does that make sense? Happy to elaborate further in this Q&A, although I do not want to step on Mary's toes (if she indeed has toes).

1. Would you say that doggie style is *not* inherently degrading to women?

2. Would you say that blow job is *not* inherently degrading to women?

3. Would you argue that it's not true that for a man to have sex with a woman is, in general, to the man's advantage and to the woman's disadvantage?

4. Do you feel an extra pleasurable sensation during deep penetration?

5. How do you wash your ass? Do you apply soap to ass area only, or do you reach inside to clean it like I do?

Hi Mary. Not sure if you're around, but I have a question. Why do you think the people here would want to ask you anything?
