Soble at his best, really. Jenkins: what a narcissistic clown.

I found the response by Soble too harsh, kinda not graceful at all. Seems disproportionate.

Patricia

I agree, but I think that Jenkins was way out of line for writing that paper, her apology wasn't adequate, and the pity parties breaking out on facebook are ridiculous. Shouldn't she retract the thing? At any rate, it seems two unpleasant people were working independently on love and they've been brought together by kismet.

Hi, dumbass!

Patricia isn't Jerzy. I'm neither Carrie nor Robin. I'm a man who doesn't know one and doesn't care for the other.

I found Soble to be on point and restrained in some cases. The fact that she didn't address him as "Professor Soble" to start the email set the tone after she attributed a shitty view to him. She deserved every bit of that spanking. The fact that she is a woman and younger is irrelevant. She has a named chair and she deserved to be humiliated as the imposter that she actually is. UBC should strip the title from her and _Ergo_ should retract the entire paper.

What pity parties?

Not that I want to absolve her at all, but that title address thing is just silly. If she has a named chair, as you point out, she deserves to be treated like a colleague and peer. She's not a graduate student.

I am not at all into CJ, and especially her SJW bullshit, but that response by Sobel was ridiculous, as is Leiter's fawning.

She made a mistake. And then wrote a perfectly nice and contrite apology, and received that insane screed in response. What sort of megacock gets upset when someone uses the locution, <first "if="" i="" may"="" name="">????</first>

Someone who has been criticzied by name in a journal for an article he didn't write, that didn't have his name on it, and was in fact written by an undergraduate. That's who.

this may shock you, but graduate students are also to be treated as adults and are supposed to know the basics of scholarly writing.

She didn't make a mistake. She misattributed a shitty argument to Soble on the assumption that it would go unnoticed and she would get credit for soundly criticizing a big name in her area. Look at the source she cited. It's not even a matter of being smart or stupid; anyone with a below-average IQ could answer the question whether there was any reason to think that paper was written by Soble. If this was a "mistake," someone should explain just how such a mistake occurs. It's flat out dishonesty, and I daresay the general response would be quite different if Jenkins were a man (though Soble and Leiter are responding as one would expect).

What's the movie where Jack Nicholson is asked "How do you write women so well?" and he answers: "I think of a man, then take away rationality and accountability"? A totally unrelated thought, of course...

I'm not sure if Soble is aware, but CJ has pretty much ignored nearly everyone else who has written about love recently. In one interview she suggested that she was the first philosopher to write on love since Plato's Symposium. It wasn't that extreme, but it was close, one of those this is a seriously neglected area, blah blah blah, no serious thought on the issue . . . . insults.

Hmmm, I don't even read this topic, but I know both Nozick and Kolodny have published on it in high profile places.

not the right implicature; I meant she's not supposed to talk to him as if her professors rather than a potential colleague.

"At least mention that this guy that you are here picking apart may have had more reasonable views flowing through his brain. Do you teach "Straw Person" in logic or critical reasoning?"

...erm, sorry Alan (if I may?), but if one criticizes a published journal article, while declining to engage with "more reasonable views" expressed by the same author in a completely different publication, that is not the same thing as attacking a straw man.

"Mistake Number 4: No, you may not presume to be on such terms with me that you may address me as "Alan." Who or what do you think you are, Dr. Professor Jenkins? Sheesh. More pomposity."

My God what a loser. Let me out of this damn profession.

I wrote the Pasquale comment. Here's the deal. An apology -- which is what her weak email attempt was -- is a formal action. She should have been more formal with him especially if she had never met him or interacted with him at all expect by attributing an undergraduate paper to him. Every professional email I send, I begin with a formal address of the person. That's just one of many mistakes she made. Entitled, bratty, overly familiar, falsely attributing named-chair train wreck that she is.

Maybe, maybe. Doesn't mean you should be a dick about it and ask for "more pomposity".

Most of professional philosophy thinks you are ridiculous. Why can't you just drop this shit with Carrie Jenkins? Just how unpopular were you in high school, really?

Hi Professional Philosophy friend of ridiculous Carrie,

Carrie probably should have thought twice before going to war with a motherfucker like BL.

This is a worry of mine. Some people publish twenty articles on the same topic and change their view throughout. I consider myself a thorough reader, but I can’t be sure that some I criticize in print don’t have a better argument in a part I missed. Fuck me. You put it in writing it’s fair game (a reasonable exception is when a book superseded an essay by a number of years, which is all Soble really needs in this case)
