I've said annoyed things about Kate here before, but the evidence seems to be that her book is actually pretty good philosophy. I'm sympathetic to the reviewer's criticism, but then I bet Kate would be too.

For once, Manne argues, we should put individual men to the side. Misogyny is “a social and political phenomenon with psychological, structural, and institutional manifestations”. And we should evaluate those manifestations from the perspectives of its victims. #NotAllMen? #YesAllWomen.

Manne goes on to elaborate the gender norms that misogyny enforces. We exist in a gendered economy in which women are assumed to owe men. The rules are: first, we must give men moral goods – such as sex, care and unpaid housework. Second, we must not ask men for the kinds of goods we give. Finally, women are not supposed to take masculine coded perks and privileges. (The presidency, for instance.)

As if anyone needed one more hamfisted attempt to conjoin bleating about some vague liberal ideals of "justice" and "authenticity" with even sloppier post-structuralist garbage. Tears over Hillary Clinton complete the package. Just more narcissism dressed up as insight.

The mindset is a familiar conspiracy theory as "Emmanuel" points out.

Not going to give the Manchester Guardian another hit.

The Manchester Guardian! That's funny - if you're 103 years old.

Manne's excellent book is sold out on Amazon. It's great when academic philosophy has a real contribution to make to the wider world. (Not all excellent philosophy does or has to, of course.)

And what's so excellent about it? Looks like shit.

The Manchester Guardian was a great newspaper in living memory. One doesn't have to be 103 years old to note the decline.

does anyone know if the book is out of print or what? she hasn't talked about it in a while on Twitter. She seems very shy about it.

What book goes "out of print" without two months of coming out? As for not talking about it on Twitter, maybe she just has enough sense not to talk about her own work constantly. Maybe she's working on newer projects.

Kate?

Ha, no. I met her once at a screening interview several years ago, but that's been our only interaction. I just have this problem of sometimes failing to prevent myself from replying to dumb shit on the internet.

You realize I was sarcastic? the book has been allegedly unavailable for a while in the US—or something like that. She's been updating her followers like twice a day in an obnoxious humble bragging way.

Ah, sorry, I didn't realize. Not connected with her on social media. That sounds tedious. (me = Dharmakirti = Tai)

Agreed. Have you ever hunted snipe?
