The Weinberg List

http://dailynous.com/2017/12/06/reporting-sexual-assault-harassment-philosophy/

"I am willing to confidentially collect information from victims of sexual harassment and assault by members of the profession with the aims of determining whether any of those accused of such behavior have more than one accuser, and, if so, facilitating initial communication among such accusers. Victims can email me a description of what happened (as specific or as vague as they are comfortable with sharing) and name the perpetrator. I’ve created a new email account for this purpose: problemphilosophers@gmail.com."

A naked power grab. It should be called out as such.

Wonder if Weinberg's list will feature an octopus?

More like moral preening and a desperate attempt to sustain a narrative. 10 minutes ago overt harassment in philosophy departments was mostly a thing of the past while an unconscious sexism was poisoning everything from searches to syllabi. Now we are supposed to forget all that and accept musings about a silent and hidden rape culture evidenced somehow by Hollywood's casting couch.

"Please, send me your gossip-- but for JUSTICE." This seems like a completely terrible idea and if he doesn't immediately get twenty emails complaining about harassment by Weinberg I'll be shocked.

Troll the shit out of this.

This was my immediate thought too. Come on people, do it! It takes 5 minutes to set up a throwaway email account, and just think of the lolz. (But watch out for identifying information in the email header).

Who is going to be the first to register iwasrapedbyjustinweinberg@gmail.com?

I like that he's going to coach the witnesses so that they can be sure to tell similar stories. Or if that's an unfair characterization, he's going to put them together if they pass his bullshit detector so they can help each other, by perhaps "remembering" more details.

If word gets out about this, he risks destroying the credibility of the complaints. Stories will become too perfect with strange matching details.

Witness 1: "And, a few months later I realize that he was masturbating with both hands, one on top of the other. I found this really strange."

Witness 2: "After he made me get drunk, he locked me in his apartment, dropped his pants and started masturbating. I thought he must have had a really small penis. But now I realize that he was using two hands. I could barely see the tip of his penis poking out. . . . "

How could you defend yourself against these mutually re-enforcing stories?

I look forward to watching him cry when he faces multi-million dollar lawsuits.

Justin Weinberg has always been a scumbag, a dullard, and a dishonest broker. But this is a new low even for him.

Mestrius hits the nail right on the head.

I also love how Weinberg himself will not only set up avenues for these accusers to bring their stories into line with each other (I guess Weinberg hasn't read Elizabeth Loftus, or maybe he has), but also gets to determine for himself which items are worth pursuing and which aren't. People accusing Weinberg or others he deems indispensible will surely get dismissed as 'trolls', without a word to anyone.

Those of us who have had dealings with this embarrassment know how he loves to censor any comments that threaten his preferred world picture. Why on earth would any sane person trust him to be an impartial arbiter of something as important as this?

If this doesn't come back to hit him squarely in the nose, and hard, and soon, then we're really in trouble. I hope this is a step too far for him, even given the utter abandonment of fairness or critical thought by the profession in general these past few years. But I've been consistently overestimating the moral integrity of my fellow philosophers ever since Amy Ferrer was installed as APA leader.

This update from DN:

"UPDATE: The aforementioned proposal has been slightly revised in light of comments here and elsewhere. The details are still a work in progress. There is a chance I may work with or completely hand the project over to a lawyer or reporter. I will keep you apprised of any developments."

Sounds like he's backing away. Probably a good idea.

Wait, so you guys are seriously discussing deliberately manufacturing false rape accusations to unseat someone professionally? Surely there's a better way to make your point than resort to that kind of despicable behaviour? It's also utterly hypocritical.

Callicles

For the record I think Weinberg's proposal is shockingly bad.

I'm surprised that you, of all people, are so concerned with what is shameful by convention. The person who is superior by nature uses his guile and courage to bring down his opponents, disregarding conventional justice.

What do you mean "you of all people?" Do you know me?

Oh right you are referring to "Callicles". Bit slow on the uptake, sorry.

He or she is making a Plato joke. Callicles is a rascal in a Platonic dialogue (I want to say the Gorgias). Kinda like Thrasymachus in the Republic

Justin Weinberg is drunk on the perception of power and influence. His proposal, with himself quite literally at the center, embodies the problem.

As always, that's the most annoying/pathetic thing about Weinberg. As both a shitty philosopher and a narcissist (and probably someone who knows he's both) everything he does like this is a halfway calculated attempt to make himself more important.

He's like the kid in high school who's not smart or athletic or popular, but tries to edge his way into the in-crowd by editing the school paper.

What strikes me as particularly horrendous about it is that Weinberg is putting himself above question. Everyone is in question, except for him. If a reporting mechanism is to be set up, it should be through an independent party.

Chang

This is all grade A faggot shit.

This Cultural Revolution garbage is part of the real time implosion of the humanities and if Weinberg is the kind of talent that the future holds the apocalypse can't get here fast enough.

Bring that up during your next diversity training session, between advocacy for the inclusion of voodoo in your metaphysics syllabus and unshaven trannies peeing in the ladies room. I'm sure you'll give yourself a big pat on the back - let's call this a "Weinberg" - for your sensitivity.

Anaximander

9 day(s) ago

Would you find transgender women peeing in the ladies' room more acceptable if they shaved? I'm sure many do...

PS: seems like you want to be on the Against Weinberg side, which I think is the right one in this case. In case you don't know: saying shitty, overly provocative things like the above doesn't help your side. It just makes it harder for them not to look like raving, resentful jerks.

Petrarch

9 day(s) ago

The objection to "unshaven trannies peeing in the ladies room" usually comes from feminists, since such alleged social deviants are not beautiful beacons of femininity, whose chastity macho men like Weinberg are sworn to protect.
