Can I include this review?

Bhartrhari really hit the nail on the head here. There's usually some of this when some famous philosopher dies, but this time it seems really extreme. I wonder why.

Also, am I the only one who never found Fodor's quips particularly witty or funny?

"Also, am I the only one who never found Fodor's quips particularly witty or funny?"

I think they were a mixed bag. I wasn't a massive fan of the dismissive attitude towards parts of analytic philosophy (on display in the review linked above) and adding his brand of humor to that didn't improve things, in my view. Having said that, there was plenty of good to go with the bad. As with most people. I recall some remark about flies and persons that I thought was genuinely funny. Overall, he was a good thing. (I only mentioned the review above because someone had linked to it approvingly.)

There's a good Fodor thread developing at the Pilos. I just shared a Fodor story there:

Bro, your blog is neither funny nor interesting. Give it a rest.

Fodor was occasionally amusing and was often annoying with his quips. I think it all got tiresome back in the 80's if not before. By the end, he was almost a stale parody of himself.

Yeah. Human beings are pretty intolerable.

Philosophy didn't take itself so seriously back in the '80s. When writing a book, you'd try to keep the number of jokes and number of citations approximately equal. Fodor was the best at this.

Whether funny or not, Fodor knew how to write as opposed to such luminaries as Dummett.

Signing and circulating a petition on social media to have a colleague’s work retracted because it didn’t cite, or disagreed with, you or your friends.

Adelard

Sorry but Fodor was not a Blanchard. Nice try though.

Constantly trying to convince the internet that you were a poor victim of a cyber mob.

Trying to mask the fact that one is a self-righteous bully who likes to participate in cyber mobs by insulting people who have been targeted by cyber mobs.
