This thread confuses lifting weights with body building. But there are other goals that you can pursue, namely strength. Strength is useful. And it is very refreshing to spend some time pursuing the clear, objective goal of getting stronger on the big lifts: squat, deadlift, bench press, and press.

Many women, who are making themselves scrawny and weak through endless cardio, would benefit a great deal from lifting for strength. This is one of the good things about Crossfit (may God strike me dead). It's helped many women get over the fear of getting bulky (which just won't happen) and see strength as a goal worth pursuing.

there definitely is a problem in trying to train for endurance events and muscle gain, as long cardio is a muscle-killer. my compromise is to train as if i were a 400m runner: 100 / 200 / 400 repeats, along with squats, deadlifts, glute bridges -- anything for hip extension -- and core plus balance plus form (plyometrics when i'm feeling really good).
