"Is it ok to enjoy art that’s made by sexist assholes? I don’t know about the rest of you, but I’m kind of sick of the question. I just don’t have it in me to sit through one more dinner party conversation monopolized by a mansplaining colleague bent on defending Woody Allen’s shitty movies. (I’m just gonna put this out there: most of those movies would suck even if they weren’t made by the child-raping, daughter-marrying, embodiment of narcissistic White male entitlement.)"

What a fucking tool.

This is a great example of why I try not to hang out with academics.

Strikingly, her answer appears to be 'yes'. She just thinks that its aesthetically wrong to enjoy Woody Allen because it is (mostly) objectively unenjoyable.

His movoes appeal only to philistines.

Nicholas

His movies really do suck, though. And it's the same one over and over again.

What Nicholas said (with a few obvious exceptions). You'll never see anyone try to pull the "And his movies suck too" argument off with Polanski, though.

Great, thanks!

I always say, anonymous commenters at phil metaforum are the best movoe critics.

"What’s rotten in our personal state of Denmark is sexuality itself—what MacKinnon started referring to more than thirty years ago as our culture’s eroticization of gendered relationships of dominance and submission."

The problem "is sexuality itself"????

Can someone please explain that? Does she think that all sexuality involves the "eroticization of gendered relationships of dominance and submission"? Or is it just "our culture"? I really don't know what she means?

Bernard

She means that our sexuality has been tainted by our culture. We eroticise domination and submission because domination and submission are related to gender roles: men are dominant, women are submissive.

She didn't say that. Nothing even close. I really wish she'd say what she means. Looking back over it, her post is incredibly stupid. This person is employed?

Either way, her claim sounds really implausible. Do gay mean ever get off on S&M? Is this a result of the gendering of domination? Or might domination just be stimulating to some? How does someone like this explain the existence of the dominatrix?

Again, either way, the psychological speculation about what was getting Shrek, Fat Albert, CK, and the like off is silly. Did CK want to have people watch him masturbate and a kind of domination? That's not clear at all. It sounds kind of humiliating. Perhaps Fat Albert just wanted to fuck women who he had no chance with unless they were drugged. What kind of simpleton would reduce all this to the pleasures of domination.

Yeah. Justin asked a stupid, tired question; she said it was a stupid and tired question and answered it anyway, then used the platform to say whatever the fuck she wanted. I respect that.

Still, I bet even she'd admit that Crimes and Misdemeanors is pretty good.

It's stupid, unsubtle rant that twice references an anti-sex nutter.

I think it's her tone that's contemptible, perhaps even more than what she says.

Bernard

No, that's in every culture. Non-Western cultures do it even more, and it's normal. It makes people happy and fulfilled.

Gay couples have the same dominant/submissive structure as straight couples. Paradoxically domination isn't stimulating to a lot of people. It's being dominated that stimulates them, especially women. (Almost all women enjoy being dominated.)

Toju

It's both. Why would you agree to write something on the topic and then just go off on a rant. It's pure grandstanding.

I especially like the jabs at "white male entitlement" and "our culture."

White men = evil

the west = evil

sexuality = the source of evil

Gee, I wonder why white men are underrepresented in college? I'm sure they feel very welcome. And the curriculum is just so enlightening. I can't figure it out.

Toju

Agreed, Hao, it is both.
