Publishing advice

Say you are a junior faculty who got a rejection from a very solid specialist journal, in a subfield that isn't huge. The referee thought the paper was good but suffered from some potentially fixable problems. If you can, should you publish it in a comparable generalist journal without serious revisions from the earlier rejected version? Or would that tarnish your reputation in the eyes of the possibly senior referee from the first journal?

If you agree with the criticisms, why wouldn't you just fix them anyway?

Time and fatigue. I was sick of working on that paper and it would have taken time and effort to revise it. I'm open to down the road though. But I really want to just be through with the paper.

I think just take a break and go back to it in a couple of weeks. I think you should aim for excellence, rather than just getting by.

Being sick of working on a paper is understandable, but I think you should take a week or two away from the paper to recharge and then make the changes. Even aside from the senior referee looking down on you for being lazy, in the future you'll probably be glad that you took the time to make the changes, given that you seem to agree with the criticisms. At worst you can make some perfunctory changes and make a note of any remaining issues in a footnote or two. The first strategy is best, but the second is better than doing nothing, I think.

You both sound reasonable. Thanks.

I'm with the others. I wouldn't look at it for a few weeks or a month, then take a day or two to address the problems that were identified and send it off again. If there's anything left over that I wasn't able to address after dedicating a couple of days to it, then I'd patch it up as best I could and send the paper off anyway, and try to fix it properly while I wait for my rejection from the generalist journal.

the referee is not gonna read it anyway, since s/he has read it already once. so go for it.
