Haidt, Kipnis, Pinker and others on free speech tour on American campuses

Sandra

"Our sister US free-speech charity, spiked US, is organising the Unsafe Space Tour, bringing all-star free-speech line-ups to American University, Columbia, Rutgers, Harvard and more. Panels featuring Jonathan Haidt, Bret Weinstein, Laura Kipnis, Steven Pinker, Sarah Haider, Kmele Foster, Wendy Kaminer, Jonathan Rauch, Nadine Strossen, Mark Lilla, Robby Soave and Elizabeth Nolan Brown, and spiked’s own Brendan O’Neill, Ella Whelan and Tom Slater, will take on topics from Safe Spaces and identity politics to Trump and PC. Unsafe Space is a provocation with a profound point to make. Our aim is to puncture taboos not for its own sake, but to the end of understanding what is going on, drawing out the radical, humanist case for free speech, and convincing students of why every college should be an Unsafe Space. Join us. Get your free tickets to our first two panels, at American University and Rutgers. And keep your eye on this page for upcoming events at Harvard, Columbia and elsewhere. If you’d like to be kept updated, or if you want to bring the tour to your campus, email Viv Regan." There is a visible absence of philosophers from that list. I'm beginning to think tenure has reached its limits if it doesn't shield you from censorship by your own colleagues. If you have tenure and you want to prove me wrong, then invite this event to your campus!

Associating with Spiked is a major mistake by Pinker, Kipnis, Lilla etc. They will come to regret it.

What's wrong with Spiked? There aren't many media outlets that have the courage to do this.

Any bets on whether Pinker will tell us (again) that our daughters wouldn't get raped if we just taught them not to get drunk or wear revealing clothes?

Pinker is also a race realist. An evil man!

Is that sarcastic? I'm a race realist too and I don't seem to be evil.

Chapter seven of Better Angels of Our Nature. Not as bad as Kipnis outright laughing at someone for being raped in a frat house, but still.

What a stupid misogynist asshole, expecting women to exercise even minimal standards of prudence. Women should not have any responsibility for their choices and actions, none whatsoever.

Are you saying that people can bear responsibility for other's people's actions Christian? So if I'm driving in my car and some drunk driver smashes into me, it's partly my fault for being in a car on the road while knowing that some people are irresponsible drivers? Interesting.

No, but he is saying if with small effort you could act so as to dramatically lower the probability of such a crash, it would be imprudent not to do so. Your example actually vindicates what he said when it is interpreted properly.

I know this is just an angry circle jerk, but I seriously do not understand how feminists can recognize the rape beast lurking in the heart of man but then find it objectionable to counsel women against getting blackout drunk in places full of men.

Feminists don't think there is a rape beast lurking in the heart of men. Feminists believe that men have been taught to view women in ways that are conducive to believing them fair game for rape. They think that men can unlearn this.

Encouraging blackout drinking, a culture of casual sex, and other me-gotta-be-me basic-bitch narcissism as some kind of right to self-expression, in both genders, has certainly played no part of this.

Yeah, because rape didn’t exist before!

Idiot.

Exactly, Roman/Stephan. And, as death existed before cars and drunk drivers, giving advice against drunk driving is drunk-shaming and should not be condoned.

Ok fine, but while they're busy unlearning deeply entrenched behavioral dispositions, is it advisable to get blackout drunk in their presence. Would you tell your daughter that it's perfectly reasonable to get sloshed at the frat party now that the Greek organizations on campus have mandatory diversity training for all new pledges?

That's not dogma. That's an empirical generic claim about what feminists believe.

Germain

I'd say that that is risky behaviour for anyone regardless of gender.

More importantly though, will you be teaching your son that he is responsible for his own behaviour, and that raping anyone is a serious and heinous crime? That he can't blame women for his own actions?

Wolfhart

So what? They still believe it despite strong evidence as an article of faith.

>I'd say that that is risky behaviour for anyone regardless of gender.

Why so upset then? There's no disagreement on this point.

Anon, just stop.

Nah, like the other patriarchs in my family tree I will be teaching my sons that rape is an enjoyable pastime and that moral responsibility is an illusion. DUH!
