On post-Kantian Continental philosophy

It is a steaming pile of bullshit. Discuss.

High quality argumentation once again, from the indispensable "core" of under-employed counterexample to a counterexample to a counterexample to an objection to Fine's 3rd point "philosophers." Once you guys acknowledge that the metablogs have always catered to just as narrow and tightly-specified an identitarian minority in the profession as the femphil site, you might find it easier to have conversations with people outside your resentful echo chamber.

Beats the grounding literature bs

Shah

Oh yeah, figuring out what philosophers mean by 'in virtue of' talk is such bs LOL

Shah

On the other hand, figuring out what rambling idiots like Žižek are talking about is soooo important LOL

Obviously what philosophy needs is less people talking about what fundamentality is, and more people relating anecdotes about defecating noisily in the corner of a room.

Hubert

You can add another two rounds of counterexamples and it's still better than e.g. Schelling. There are some good philosophers who we usually call Continental, for instance some of the Neo-Kantians. But no one heard about the good ones except ourselves, and the ones that are famous in the broader culture are the likes of Derrida and Lacan.

It is a steaming pile of bullshit.

Shah

Not all of it, but a lot of it. This thread already mentions Zizek, Derrida and Lacan. I'll throw in Deleuze, Lyotard, Heidegger after 1933, Husserl in the 'Cartesian Meditations', most of Marx, most of Nietzsche, most of Hegel, Adorno, Marcuse, Foucault, Fichte.

Irigaray, Butler, Sloterdijk - more steaming bs.

Jules

Schopenhauer - bs.

God, I read a lot of crap in this life... Did I mention Ricoeur?

I have a lot of respect for Gadamer.

Hu

Also, other post-Kantian continental philosophers such as Hermann Cohen, Helmholtz, Ernst Cassirer and Rudolph Carnap.

Hu

and Husserl

Hans

If Husserl or the neo-kantians were contemporary, we would think about them as analytic philosophers. They would think so too, and they'd be hurt to be grouped with postmodernism or neo-marxism or 'critical realism'.

Hans

BTW I don't think you meant to use Carnap as an example of a Continental philosopher. 'Continental' doesn't mean someone from the European continent.

I think Hu is joking around, subtly pointing out the incoherence of the category on its face.

Great to see there's another online venue where people with no idea what they're talking about can mutually affirm the views they adopted in grad school after hearing them thrown around by some professor or other. For fuck's sake read a god-damned book for once you illiterate shitheads.

Another edgy essay!

"Shen," maybe the metablog is a kind of Hell, but if you confine your efforts to securing a little room not exposed to the fire you might find you're not immediately and always such a little bitch.

The fatal defect that infects most of 'Continental' philosophy is that they write in such an obscure style that it's very hard to recognize the good philosophy in the middle of the bs. Sometimes it's one and the same author (Hegel, Nietzsche) who says something interesting here and there, but also bullshits for hundreds of pages. Other times an author writes an entire corpus of only bullshit (especially the French poststructuralists and the postmodernists).

Then you have someone like Adorno who pretends that jazz music is fascist. Not obscure anymore, just barefaced bull.

I have a job, I do the usual stuff, I barely read any continental philosophy in my life. I just started reading a book on Gadamer and, boy, he's really good.

Nice clear writing there, clear writing guy. In the immortal words of Bun B, "Go read a book you illiterate son of a bitch / and step up yo vocab."

Anyone who thinks that Hegel and Nietzsche are examples of bullshitters "for hundreds of pages" hasn't read either.
