Third World Quarterly

Why is is not a confidentiality breach for the now-resigning 15-member editorial board to be stating that the article failed some stages of peer-review for the special issue, before it was repackaged as a viewpoints piece?

I imagine that they feel that the lack of transparency and willful disregard of the professional judgement of the reviewers on the part of the editor are so egregious that they need to say this. The fact that the editor has issued a disingenuous statement saying that the article went through the peer review process gives the misleading impression that the piece passed that process successfully. They needed to correct that impression.

I, for one, will no longer submit to Third World Quarterly.

It's not a philosophy journal. People in soc/anthro will have heard of it, and though it is not prominent Chomsky is on the board.

The furor over this article, if anything, makes me update slightly in favor of thinking it might have some good points. If it's really that weak and without any merit, no need to make a big deal about it.

And it's not particularly offensively written. It's not as if it has slurs or lots of affect laden language. Radical left writing can be a LOT ruder.

It's stupid as fuck. Dude needs some history lessons, since he thinks (among other things) that Haiti. Had no significant colonial history.

I'm all for the outrage against this article if it means we can be outraged by the equally bad papers that get published every day but no one cares because they are politically benign.

omg yes, so much yes. we should start a new journal that does nothing but expose shit papers in other journals.

The author has now asked for the volume to be withdrawn. So now only the editor-in-chief defends it! And Chomsky.

It has been withdrawn, but for a different reason! Threats against editor!

It would have been interesting if the author hadn't already requested a retraction and the editor then retracted it in the face of threats. Then the author could probably sue.

Justin loves to bully people and also tell them that bullying is bad.

and then Kukla appears in the comments to remind to remind us to not forget about her. Sad.

I’ve had threats against me for things I publish (and for things I don’t) qua editor – not death threats for that specifically, but other physical threats. And more generally death threats get flung around all the time on the internet. This doesn’t surprise me at all and I am surprised others are surprised. I sure wish I knew why they count these threats as ‘credible’ because frankly I provisionally call bullshit. Masculine bravado is thrown around liberally – whatever.

Weinberg also just had to make it clear in his post that he really hated the article. Wouldn't want to be mistaken for a defender of free speech, since that's now a right wing ideal.

Unless she repents, she will be speechless at the White Throne. There will be no selfies or tweets there. Only truth--and the unbearable anguish of finally having to face the shame of a life squandered, day after day after day after day: on empty lusts.
